Worth It

I woke up from my mid-afternoon nap [it is during semestral breaks that terms such as these are coined.] with the ringing of the phone. I rushed to answer it.

“Hello?”

“Hey,” It was my best friend.

“Oh it’s you,”

“So nice to hear from you too, best bud,” she said sarcastically.

I grinned. “I’m sorry. I just thought you were… you know.”

“Yeah, yeah, I do. So what? He hasn’t called yet?”

“Nope. He didn’t call last night too.”

“You mad at him?”

“Nah. It’s not his fault that his girlfriend’s not very amusing to talk to.”

“Is that SELF PITY I’m hearing?”

I smiled. Good ol’ gal pal. Hit me right on target. “You’re right. This is pathetic. But what can I do? It’s like I need an appointment to get time from him. Like he’s some sort of V.I.P. movie star or something.”

She laughed. “I dig ya. But anyways, I gotta go. My mom’s calling. Call you back, ok?”

“Sure, thanks.”

I lay back on the bad and sighed. Great. False alarm. Why the heck isn’t he calling?

Now don’t get me wrong. My boyfriend isn’t one of those jerky types. In fact, he used to be really sweet, even cheesy. Used to be.

I decided to get out of the house for a while. This depression shouldn’t be something a good chocolate parfait couldn’t solve.

While drowning my sorrows in vanilla and fudge, this cute guy came up and sat beside me over at the counter.

“That ice cream’s gonna give you a bit of a sugar shock later.”

I shrugged. “Oh, well.”

“My name’s Miggy.”

Hmm… Guess it couldn’t hurt. “Charlotte.”

Well, turns out that Miggy was really fun to talk to. And he even made me this rose out of the table napkin. [Corny, but cute!] Chris [ie. Absent boyfriend] never gave me anything like that.

After I finished my parfait, Miggy asked for my number. “Maybe I could call you sometime.”

I thought for a while, looking at him. He’s cute all right. Then I smiled. Cute as thuis guy was, a thousand of him couldn’t possibly compare to MY Chris.

I stood up and smiled. “I’m sorry. I don’t have a phone.”

Bye bye, Miggy

Guess who would come knocking at my door the next day carrying half a dozen white roses, a stuffed bunny, and two fuji apples? Chris! [Big, big smile.] after he gave me a huuge hug, he said, “I’m sorry I didn’t get to visit you much. I was working to get you these.”

See? What did I tell you?

Definitely worth it.
