NEW YORK -- Latest word is that Vicki Lewis may not be joining the Broadway “Chicago” after all. Instead, I hear that Sharon Lawrence, who was to have played Lois/Bianca in the “Kiss Me, Kate” revival, may become Velma in the New York “Chicago”.....Joe Machota (Ren in the “Footloose” national tour) is in the current “Little Women” workshop.....Emily Skinner will leave “The Dead” on April 2 to do “The Full Monty” in San Diego; she will be replaced in “The Dead” by understudy Donna Lynne Champlin.....“Thoroughly Modern Millie” is scheduled for its world premiere production this fall at La Jolla Playhouse; as we know, Kristin Chenoweth was supposed to have taken the title role but is now otherwise engaged. Rumor has it that in the running for the title role is Idina Menzel (“Rent,” MTC “The Wild Party”). Laura Benanti and Sarah Uriarte Berry are said to be possibilities for the role of Miss Dorothy. David Campbell and Marc Kudisch look set to continue in the leading male roles they played in the workshop, but it appears Bea Arthur may not be continuing in her workshop role of Mrs. Meers.....We’re heading into the final six weeks or so of the season, and things naturally slow down in the summer (although the last one brought us “Kat and the Kings” and “Voices in the Dark”). While there’s always a chance something will turn up, it appears at the moment that after “The Wild Party” opens in April, there may not be another new musical opening on Broadway until “The Seussical” in November. (Of course, there’s always “Jane Eyre”).
