Our Engagement
April 20, 2002
Dave's story
On the morning of April 20th, Joslyn and I set forth on a journey that
would change both of our lives forever. Although Joslyn had no idea what
I had planned, she had looked forward to the hike with such beautiful
vistas. We left Knoxville and two hours later reached our destination,
Cherokee National Forest in North Carolina. We were to follow the famous
Appalachian Trail up to Grassy Ridge, a southern bald with an elevation
of over 6,000 feet. From the peak there are 360-degree views, all other
peaks in the area are covered with trees and views are limited.
The brilliant people that guess at forecasting the whether
called for a cloudy day with a high chance of scattered showers. Thank
God I don't bet whether people, because it was the clearest day I could
remember in months. The stage was set for the most important question
I would ever ask.
While Joslyn was busy taking pictures of the ridge
line I hurried up the mountain, so I could prepare myself for the question.
I had reached the peak about five minutes before her and, as you can see
in the picture, anxiously awaited my future bride. The rock you see me
on in the picture is the exact spot where the I popped the question.
Joslyn's story
On the morning of April 20th Dave and I planned to go hiking. I was really
excited, because I hadn't been hiking in a long time. Although the forecast
called for rain, we headed out and after a drive through some small towns
and Roane Mountain state park, we arrived at Grassy Ridge.

I knew at once it was going to be a beautiful hike when I saw the trailhead.
Shortly after we started our hike we ran into a spruce thicket that was
mentioned in our hiking book. I began taking all kinds of pictures of
the forest, the trail, the views from the bald- everything and Dave went
on ahead. I walked happily along enjoying the beauty of the rolling mountains
and the 360 views.
The thought even crossed my mind that if I ever got engaged it would be
great for it to happen in a place like this. I had no idea that when I
reached the summit that is exactly what was to happen. It was there, at
6,000 feet, that Dave asked me the question that made me that happiest
girl in the world!
