These pages are dedicated to the use of proposed exercise machines that I believe can be used to help people who have lost the use of their legs to compensate by building the strength in their upper bodies. This is what Franklin Roosevelt did when he lost the use of his legs to polio. The machines on this site (along with following site pages) I believe are excellent allies for this purpose.

This a tricep/dip machine made by Maxicam. The young man, here, is able to just push down on the handles without having to stand or use his legs. This exercise strengthens three areas: the chest, the upper back, and the triceps. It is not necessary to pick up a weight and lift it over your head. Pushing down is much easier and can be done by someone with limited or no use of his legs or lower body. It is possible that this machine can be used by elderly patients, heart patients, and hip-replacement patients. This display can be accessed at http://www.advmax.com/2099.htm or go to MAXICAM TRICEP/DIP

The young lady here, is pulling the handles towards her with a Long pull/rowing machine. This exercise mainly strengthens the upper-back muscles, again, without having to pick up and lift a weight. It is also made by Maxicam and can be accessed on http://www.advmax.com/2009 or go to LONG PULL/ROWING SEATED

Some patients may have, or developed, the upper-body strength to push out from a seated position. This is a vertical bench press by Maxicam and can be accessed on http://www.advmax.com/2001.htm or go to VERTICAL BENCH PRESS

This a version of a seated row machine. It is made by Gracefitness as part of their Avenger Series. Instead of pulleys, as in the previous machines, it uses plates that can be put on by an assistant. As in theLong Pull/Rowing machine, the young man here is pulling the weight toward him by holding on to the curved handles. This would be used by a younger person with still some youthful strength in his upper body. It can also be used, as in the Vertical Bench Press, who has gained developed a improved degree of upper-body strength. If you log on to http://www.medxonline.com/Avenger/Avenger_sld032.htm you can see a fuller design by going to the next two pages on the Gracefitness PowerPoint display (slides 33 and 34). You can also go to AVENGER SEATED ROW |
