Krishana
Janmashtamee
The day Krishna Janmashtamee is said to be the day when Lord
Krishna born. Therefore the day is celebrated to pay homage to him. Krishna is
also one of the most famous Gods in the religion of Hinduism. In this very day
people worship by going to the temple of Krishna. Mainly in Patan at Krishna
Mandir. There people comes from around the valley. Some even get to the line
from midnight to just worship in the temple. They also celebrate the day by
singing songs of Krishna, throughout the the whole night. Krishna is believed to have been born at Mathura,
the sacred city on the Yamuna river, east of Delhi.
He was brought up in a family of
cattle herdsmen, to protect him against being murdered by his parent's
arch-enemy, the cruel King Kansa. The latter's scheme was to put him in the arms
of a wet-nurse whose milk contained a deadly poison. Baby Krishna not only
remained unharmed, but "sucked" all the milk and poison out of the
nurse's breasts thus causing her to die ! This episode explains why Krishna is
mostly - though not always - represented with a dark blue, even black face: the
effect of the poison he had absorbed.
While a young
man, Krishna loved to roam around and frolic among the "Gopi"
(cow-herd girls and shepherdesses) His adventures as a kind of "Don
Juan" are as numerous as the tales about his courage and gallantry as a
warrior during the famous battle reported in the "Mahabharata" where,
on the side of the five Pandava brothers, he acted as the conductor of Arjuna's
chariot.
