1. Eastern Redcedar
Juniperus virginiana
the berry fruit of this tree is one of the key botanical ingredients used in the making and flavoring of the alcoholic spirit "gin".             (hint: this tree has spiky foliage.)
2. Eastern hemlock
Tsuga canadensis
the bark of this tree was once a commercial source of tannin used in the production of leather.  (hint: this species will mature into a beautiful tall tree or can be kept short if trimmed to a hedge.)
3. American chestnut Castanea dentata
This tree was once very plentiful (making up about 25% of the Eastern U.S. forest).  It grew tall and big and provided useful lumber and timbers and fruit.  Tragically it has been virtually wiped out by a "super-blight" starting in the early 1900s.
4. Bald cypress
Taxoduim distichum

The heartwood of this tree is so decay resistant its been called "wood eternal".
This tree likes to live in swamps and has "knees" as shown
in the photo to the right.
5. White oak Quercus alba
One of the uses for the lumber made from this very valuable tree is for making "tight cooperage" (that is barrels that won't leak for holding whiskey and other liquids.)
6. Willow Salix spp.
This fast growing tree has wood that is weak, soft, flexible and light.  The wood and twigs are often used in basket making.  (hint: this tree is also a natural source of aspirin.)
