Mike's Monthly Moldovan Monitor
January 2004

I do seem to remember it being rather cold in Moldova in January: I have uneasy memories of a drunk policeman frogmarching me to a bar amidst all the ice in Pushkin Park to down a vodka to celebrate Old New Year, seven days after Orthodox Christmas. You can always rely on a policeman...

A current climate report from Chisinau can be found, unlikely as it may seem from this regional
American newspaper, where a Peace Corps volunteer writes a montly column. We never quite knew what to make of the Peace Corps when we met them- they were so earnest, and gave the impression that they were vetted to provide the most squeaky-clean image of American youth.

Whatever else Moldovans are doing, they are not reproducing in sufficient numbers to replace those who have gone off to the great Supreme Soviet in the sky, reports
Interfax , although  whether this has anything to do with  an excessive alcohol consumption, as reported by Moldova Azi is moot.

More bad news: Transnistira is described by Romania's Foreign Minsister in this
Washington Times article as "a black hole of transborder organized crime, including drug smuggling, human trafficking and arms smuggling," but
the President of the rebel region predicatably denies arms dealing in
Pravda.

Finally, I regret to report that  Moldova couldn't be bothered to enter the
Eurovision Song Contest. Even Andorra has entered this year!
