Mike's Monthly Moldovan Monitor
December 2003

Last month I think I reported that there are hopes in Moldova that European Union might be knocking on its door asking it to cough up for its subs in the not too distant future. The Orwellian-sounding Truth News puts this in context: Moldova's prospects for joining are above those of Russia, Belarus and Ukraine, prospects which are presumably only slightly worse than Guatemala's.The EU's views on its relations can be found here.

Here's some cheery news I missed:  claims that dozens of "dirty bomb" missiles have disappeared from Transnistria, as reported in
China Daily,
but  any that hadn't gone AWOL have now been returned to Russia, says Associated Press.

The Transnistrian problem never seems to go AWO?L, though. Interfax
quotes a Transnistrian official saying that a solution is years away, whilst Gateway to Russia gives Moldova's President the chance to air his views on the recent failure of a prospective settlement. The same article refers to new  export "niches" being gained by Moldova's entry to the World Trade Organisation, but Ros Business Consulting reports that Moldova has had to accept 10 000 tonnes of Russian wheat as humanitarian aid.

And finally, Moldova's path to the next World Cup finals is to be denied by
Italy, Slovenia, Scotland, Norway and Belarus.
Up until 1992 this would have been simply a rope ferry across the River Dnestr. Now it is an international ferry service between Moldova & Ukraine.
