Oslo: 17th July 2004
It would be criminal to visit Oslo and not not spend an hour or two at the Munch Museum. Having said that, it could leave a slightly unnerving aftertaste to a holiday. Dark doesn't begin to do justice to many of the paintings, but coming face to face with the original of The Scream that has adorned rather too many student walls can be a satisfying, if ennervating experience.
"I was walking along a road with two friends. The sun set. I felt a tinge of melancholy. Suddenly the sky became blood-red. I stopped and leaned against a railing feeling exhaused, and I looked at the flaming clouds that hung like blood and a sword over the blue-black fjord and the city. My friends walked on. I stood there trembling with fright. And I felt a loud unending scream piercing nature." Edvard Munch
