This Is Where It All Began - October 1966
After having been on an old DC-3 aircraft from Oklahoma City for what seemed like all night in a storm that caused us to have to land in Lake Charles, La. we took buses that brought our shining faces to look upon the above sign "Welcome Soldier" at about 03:00 AM. With ears that rang and had not cleared from the flight and no sleep for two nights, we started taking tests that would determine what we would be doing for the next few years (in my case the next 6 years). Needless to say, we were in no mood to mark little boxes or to listen to the Morse Code in headsets. We were then given a choice of 30 minutes sleep or breakfast. I took the breakfast. To my suprise they had one of my grandmother's breakfast recipes - a concoction of white gravy and sausage served over toast except they called it "SOS". It wasn't as good as Granny's, but it did hit the spot after the ordeal we had been through all night.
