Van Slanzar de Fanel is the second and youngest child of Goau and Varie, the king and queen of Fanelia, one of the countries in Gaea. His older brother, Folken of Fanelia, betrays his own country and leaves it while he was doing a traditional dragon slaying before being crowned as the new king of Fanelia. This gives Van the responsibilty of being the new king, even though he is only 15 earth years. He was also given the responsibilty or may I say the privilege to use the Escaflowne, a guymelef which contains the special power of Atlantis. He uses this to save his people and the whole of Gaea from the evil plans of Zaibach.

One day, while he was trying to chase the dragon to be slain, he gets into another world. There, he meets Hitomi Kazaki, the girl who can see and manipulate faith. She saves him from being killed by the dragon and helps him kill it. Then, Van brings her into his own world. Van didn't know that the girl was from the Mystic Moon, known to us as the Earth.

Hitomi helps Van and his friends in their fights. Van became very close to her, since she has saved his life many times. In one of the episodes where the Escaflowne got into a place where there are lots of drag energists, Hitomi's pendant, the one her grandmother gave her, made a contact with all the drag energists and causes the clifs and everything to collapse. Hitomi falls off a clif, and there she sees a shadow of a man with wings, just like in her dream. He reaches for her hands and saves her. Hitomi fell asleep and when she woke up, she sees the guy with the pair of beautiful wings - it was Van, the angel in her dreams. Van got his wings from the clan of his mother, the draconians. Draconians are feared creatures in Gaea, but they are the descendants of the Atlanteans, the powerful beings who we can say created Gaea. Before I forget, Folken also has wings, but they're black.

In the end, Van realizes that he loves Hitomi. He brought her back to the Mystic Moon. And there, Van together with the Fanelian people recreated Fanelia and the whole of Gaea became peaceful.
