Choleste-NormTMis a unique combination of nutritional and herbal supplements designed to support cardiovascular health by lowering serum cholesterol and triglycerides and promoting natural defenses such as antioxidant activity.* As opposed to many dietary supplements designed for cardiovascular health, Choleste-NormTM actually uses the levels of these individual ingredients in the amounts shown to be effective in scientific studies. Gugulipid is the purified oleoresin from the mukul myrrh tree, Commiphora mukul. Based on historical use of the oleoresin in Ayurvedic medicine, modern research has shown that the ketonic steroid compounds (guggulsterones) in gugulipid reduce serum cholesterol and triglycerides.* Gugulipid has also been shown to lower LDL- and VLDL-cholesterol levels while increasing levels of HDL-cholesterol. Gugulipid also has the added benefit of reducing platelet aggregation and increasing fibrinolytic activity-both actions noted to support cardiovascular health. Modern extracts of gugulipid typically provide 75 mg of guggulsterones daily. The addition of Triphalia extract in modern extracts has reduced the incidence of gastrointestinal complaints.
Niacin is a commonly recommended treatment for persons with hyperlipidemia, due to its ability to lower total cholesterol and LDL-cholesterol as well as increase HDL-cholesterol. However, side effects such as acute flush, gastrointestinal upset, glucose intolerance, and liver damage have limited patient compliance. Time-release niacin has proved disappointing due to increased risk of hepatotoxi-city. Choleste-NormTMuses inositol hexaniacinate (IHN), the only form of niacin not linked to the side effects noted above. Due to a slower post-absorptive release, IHN has created no problems with the acute flush noted for crystalline niacin, even at levels of several grams.
Chromium has been shown to compliment the actions of niacin. Chromium has been found to lower total cholesterol and increase HDL-cholesterol.* It is also a key nutrient for supporting glycemic control, making it a valuable dietary supplement for those seeking to lose weight or for persons with diabetes. Other key ingredients in Choleste-NormTMincluded to promote optimal cardiovascular health are vitamins C, E, B6, B12 and folic acid.
Vitamin C inhibits LDL-cholesterol oxidation.* It has also been shown to reduce the tocopheroxyl radical and therefore regenerate vitamin E.
Vitamin E is a powerful deterrent to LDL-cholesterol oxidation.* It acts in conjunction with selenium in the production of gutathione peroxidase. Recent epidemiological studies have demonstrated the cardioprotective effects of vitamin E in both men and women.*
Elevated levels of serum homocysteine have been clearly linked to in- creased risk of coronary heart disease. The combination of folic acid, vitamin B6, and vitamin B12 has been shown to lower homocysteine by converting it to cystathione and/or reconverting it to methionine.* Low levels of these three nutrients are commonly found in individuals with elevated levels of homocysteine.
