Midgard had its first days in the end of 1999 when the bass player Kleber Perini gathered some musicians and began the rehearsals.
The main idea of the band was, since the beginning, to make a Heavy Doom metal with 80´s spirit.
Midgard, according to the ancient Scandinavian mythology, is the world where human race dwell. It is located in the center of Yggdrasil (world-ash tree os the norsemen myth, where the 9 worlds and all that lives in them is).
The very first rehearsals heppened in the legendary rock club "Apocalypse Rock Bar", in the city of Bauru, within the State of São Paulo (Brazil). At that time the line up was changing constantly because the band was looking to be professional since its very start, and not all ex-members understood it.
In 2000 Midgard released its first demo CD "Self Liberty" with 2 songs: "Self Liberty" and "Pearls to the Pigs". The line up was: Kleber Perini (bass), FLY (vocals), Omar Rezende (guitars), Fábio Vargas (guitars) and Vinícius Perotto (drums).
This first release was praised with excelent reviews in metal magazines all over the world. Check some lines of these reviews:
"...It´s neatly done and absurdly interesting...Excelent band!" - Rock Brigade (BR)
"...and then something new rises in the Brazilian metal scene...very capable band!" - Valhalla Metal Magazine (BR)
"In spite of been a new band, Midgard shows to be very experienced and techinical...both tracks are great, well developed and played!" - Roadie Crew (Br)
"Midgard is a very interesting Band from Brazil...if the other songs will be like these 2, then we´ll surely get a real Killer!" - Heavy Oder Was! (Ger)
"...Tell the guys I loved their music. Thanks a lot for letting me listen to the tracks - they truly are good." - Intromental Management (Denmark)
"...Midgard is however not a copycat, they do have their own style...we can say that Midgard is a band with a lot of talent..." - Undertow Magazine (Belgium)
The guitar player Fabio Vargas left the band right after the demo´s release and Midgard, after several tries of adapting a new guitar player decided to remain a quartet.
Self Liberty´s repercution brought the band many good things such as the invitation to be support band to Helloween in it´s Brazilian concert in the city of Catanduva (06/17/01). Besides that the band received an amazing amount of letters and e-mails of people interested in acquiring the demo CD, not only from Brazil, but also from England, Germany, USA, Belgium, Italy, Greece, Portugal, Indonesia, Australia etc.
Also in 2001, the band made concerts all over the state of São Paulo and was chosen by the readers as revelation band (4th) and Brazilian revelation band (5th) in the poll "Masters of the Beast" of the website "...And Heavy Metal for All".
In 2002 the band released a new demo CD under the request of a Belgian label that wanted to listen more from the band. "Lamúria" brought another 2 songs "The Dark Feeling of Sadness" and "Midnight Rainbow" and received only positive reviews aswell. Check some lines:
"Lamuria, second release of this band, comes to reassure that Midgard is one of the best bands of Brazil. The doom metal presented in the first demo, "Self Liberty", last year, now sounds more original and connected. The bass player Kleber Perini is one of the greatest composers of the style, the proofs are these 2 tracks, "The Dark Feeling of Sadness" and "Midnight Rainbow". The first one, I assure without fear, is one of the best compositions of doom that I have ever heard..." - Valhalla Metal Magazine
"Now this is a diferent band. When the instrumental part of the song starts, you don't know what to expect: if the vocals come raw, it is metal; if it comes growling, it is thrash. This conclusions are possible cause both styles fit perfectly in the basis made by the band. Very well. But then everything turns upside down. The vocals come melodic, but with a very particular accent, specially when we speak of dramaticity. Besides that, the instrumental that could be both thrash or traditional metal gains completely diferent rythm and passages, giving the songs something that every band looks for, but a few can find, personality." - Rock Brigade Magazine
"Both tracks can please doom metal fans, specially those that enjoy Candlemass, The Obssessed, Memento Mori and Cith Ungol. The instrumental follows the "sabbathic" style and maybe cause of it the recording sounds like 70s and 80s." - Roadie Crew Magazine
"Impressive quality of this heavy/doom metal band, it is one of those bands that lead us to ask ourselves how come such a great band didn't record with the suport of a record company or label yet? Great musicians, great songs, inteligent lyrics. Really deserves respect." - Metalized Blood Zine
"Since the first release, Midgard is considered one of the best heavy/doom metal bands of Brazil, even being small numbered the bands of this style in the country. These guys develop their work with undeniable quality and nostalgic good taste!!!" - Metal Invaders Zine
"Lamuria is the second release of this great band, unfortunately there are only 2 songs, but this is comepletely unsignificant cause the band really takes it all with so much quality, after all both tracks are great productions" - Fly Quintal Zine
Midgard was chosen as Revelation Band of 2002 by Eliton Tomasi, editor of one of the main metal magazines of Brazil: Valhalla Metal Magazine.
The divulging of "Lamuria", however, did not last long, being interrupted by the almost complete change in the band, with only Kleber Perini remaining from the former line-up.
In its rebuilding, Midgard goes back to having five musicians again. The line-up then was Daniel Paes de Barros (vocals), Marcos Figueiredo (drums), Rafael Bianzeno and Walter Piglialarme (guitars).
In 2003, the band records its debut, "From ashes...", produced by Alex Voorhees (Imago Mortis) who also has its part on the CD, singing in the Candlemass' cover "Solitude". Another guest in the album was Ronaldo Simolla (ex-Delpht), dividing the vocals with Daniel Paes de Barros is most songs.
Also in this year, Midgard played live in Vitoria Regia Park, with two other bands, for 6 thousand people.
After the recording of "From ashes...", the guitar player Rafael Bianzeno left Midgard to join Imago Mortis, being substituted by Leandro Maia.
After that also Walter Piglialarme left the band, being substituded by Francisco Acácio.
"From Ashes..." was officially released by Force Majeure Recs. in 24th, april, 2006.
