We all know LOTR is a great story, but if it's all you ever watch, you're missing out. There's a host of great movies out there. As a starter, we're listing some of our favorite Fantasy movies (and a few well-deserving Sci-Fi flicks). Check them out at your local library or video store!
Required Viewing denotes a movie that's so awesome, Rey will flog you if you don't watch it.
Legend dir. Ridley Scott
Adventure. In this "cult classic", the Lord of Darkness seeks to destroy light and take over the universe by destroying the greatest force of good the world has ever known - the white unicorns. Jack (Tom Cruise) must descend into the depths of Hell to rescue his true love (Mia Sara) and defeat the Dark Lord's plan. Cinematically breathtaking, though the plot is paper thin.
Quotables: "A Faerie's heart beats fierce and free!"; "What is light without darkness?"
The Princess Bride dir. Rob Reiner REQUIRED VIEWING
Comedy. Five years after the death of her true love, Buttercup (Robin Wright) consents to marry the crown prince. However, A band of bumbling murderers kidnap her days before the ceremony. As the prince rides to her rescue, Buttercup falls into the hands of the same dreaded pirate who killed her love, Westley. But she soon discovers the truth about Westley's death - and that the prince is not what he appears to be.
Quotables: "I am Indigo Montoya. You killed my father. Prepare to die!"; "As you wish."; "Death cannot stop true love, all it can do is delay it a while."
The Last Unicorn Animated
When it seems all the unicorns have disappeared, one young Unicorn quests to find her lost kin. A wizard disguises her as a human to hide her from evil forces, but the spell could prove the undoing of all unicorn-kind.
Quotables: "Never run from anything immortal; it only attracts their attention."
Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl dir. Gore Verbinski Required Viewing
Do we REALLY have to tell you about this movie?
Ok, fine. It's got Orlando Bloom, Johnny Depp, and lots of swordfighting and pirate-ness. WATCH IT!
Quotables: "But why is the rum gone?"; "So we're all men of our word really... except for Elizabeth, who is in fact, a woman."
Star Wars (Original Trilogy)
dir. George Lucas
For some reason, the rest of the world can't seem to distinguish the difference between Science Fiction and Fantasy - even most public libraries lump the two together - however this is one saga that deserves to be included with any "Science Fantasy" list. Unlike Star Trek or Stargate, Star Wars doesn't dwell on scientific technicality - it just gets right to the good stuff. Rescue the princess, save the world(s), kill the bad guy(s), dance with teddy bears. Rock on, George. Rock on.
Quotables: "May the Force be with you."; "Do, or do not. There is no try."; "I've got a bad feeling about this."
