By december 2005, we have lost Richard Sandbrook, one of the most enthusiatic defenders of the plant microreserves. Specialist both in biology and economy, he accumulated a long curriculum in favour of plant conservation and sustainable development. He has promoted the microreserves initiative from Plantlife (as Vice Chairman and Treasurer), the Steering Committee of Planta Europa (Advisor), and Plant Talk Ltd. (Chair).
Richard was co-founder of Earths of the Friends (both International and in UK branches), Earthscan Publications Ltd., the Environment Liaison Center International, UNEP-UK and the European Environment Bureau. He received several appointments and awards (Fellow of the Institute of Chartered Accountants of England and Wales, 1973; Global 500 Environment Award 1985 ; Fellow of the Royal Society of Arts, 1988 ; Order of the British Empire (OBE), 1990) and developed important programmes from the International Institute for Environment and Development (IIED, period 1976-1999) being its Executive Director (1989-1999). It was, amongst others, Chair of the Trustees of the Forum for the Future, Chair of the IUCN international planning committee, and advisor both for international entities (IUCN, WBCSD) and councils or programmes (Eden Project, Dow's International Environmental Advisory Council, HRH Prince of Wales Business and Environment Programme).
The plant microreserves, their plants and their people will not forget you, Richardˇ
