MIKE AS A YOUNG MAN:
1968
Was quite a year, my Father's firm (British Channel Island Shipping Company Limited) stopped trading - part of Coast Line's audit prior to being taken over by P& O.
On the 10th May, my Father's birthady, he was told of his impending redundancy.
The company were trading with one ship (MV Mountstewart) and when that ship paid off in Liverpool on the 24th May 1968 that was the end of my Father's working career.
Unemployment was quite a new thing, as there were lots of manual/administration jobs in Ilford and the rest of the Uk at the time.
My Father was offered the task of updating Admiralty charts at St Kathrines Dock - he did not take get it - I wish he had; it would of kept him busy.

I started work for the General Post Office in North Central Area (London Telecommunications Region) on the 5th August 1968 as a Trainee Technician Apprentice.
My first wage before tax was 7 15 shillings (or 7.75).

A third of my wage was house keeping - paying my way at 16; it made me want to drink.
