MIKE'S EARLY YEARS: Born in March 1952, I lived my younger life in Ilford Essex. I attended the following schools: Cleveland Infant School (1957 - 1960). Cleveland Junior School (1960 - 1963). Loxford County Secondary (Boys) School (1963 - 1968).
Early 1960 I was sexually abused. I was playing with a school/road friend in Loxford Park, near the toilet to Loxford Lane, and a man in his thirties came up to us and started a conversation for some reason I did not know how to leave Robert had legged it and I was left with this person. It might be due to the fact Im slow to react but I did not know what this was about and any warning about talking to stranger just did not sink in. All I do know was that I was given half a crown to keep quite.
My parents did not know what to do (I think my Mother talked to our Doctor). My Fathers attitude went to become distant (must of thought I was another Seaman). Though I was given time of school to go with my Father to sea Wonderful time! As a single child I was spoilt by my Mother, but my Mother would agonise over this - later on she would accuse me of something and beat me with a can or slipper - two or three times this happened (not much fun seeing your aircrafts crash diving to the floor as she swung out). This cure was stopped when I held the slipper she was swinging. If friends from school came into the house she would monitor closely.
At secondary school I shuned any 'growing up' boyish urges. I did join the scouts and left one troop to join another and then leaving it to join a mixed youth club (Frenford Boys Club). |
