Welcome to my El Salvador page!!

I first became interested in El Salvador and its history in the fall of 1998, when my church at Central Michigan University, St. Mary's, began to look for new delegates for its annual trip to the country each spring. El Salvador has a rich history of Catholicism, although the people have been oppressed by the government. Leaders in the church took a stand with the common people, and have attempted to correct the injustices imposed on them by the military and land owners who run the government. Unfortunately, little real progress has been made, and many protests ended in blood. Many fine leaders of the church, such as Archbishop Oscar Romero and Jose Matias Delgado have given their lives for this cause. By traveling to this country, we hoped to be energized by the people's  spirit and learn more about their plight This knowledge will help us better serve our own communites as we returned.

The 1999 delegation was composed of eleven members. Each of us are members of St. Mary's parish, some are students, some are adults that work in the community. The group met weekly to discuss fundraising and learn more about El Salvador's culture and history, as well as the language (Spanish). We have bonded in a way that truly brings us closer together, and will keep us connected throughout the rest of our lives.

There are many good sites for learning more about El Salvador. Here are a few I think are especially good:

A delegation is sent to El Salvador each spring from our church. If you are interested in donating  to our cause, or would like more information, please feel free to write me at [email protected]. Thank you.
