The Dommel's Adoption Journey

About Us
October 13, 1999: Well, we've reached an initial goal -- the last Home Study
Interview was yesterday which also included the home inspection. The Social
Worker came out to the house to check it over and ensure that it's a safe,
suitable environment to raise a child. Every scrap of paperwork for the Home
Study has been completed and turned in as we got back both the Childline
(child abuse) and the police records check clearances back last week. We
got copies of our birth certificates and marriage license to turn in and all of
our references (except one!) have returned their letters to the agency. So
now we wait for her to put the Home Study report together which she tells us
should take about 2 weeks or so.

CCAI (the adoption agency) has forwarded the format they want to the Social
Worker for the report. Many of the adoption agencies we spoke with said that
they had a specific format they require for the Home Study. So one thing we
asked our Home Study agency was to make sure they were flexible enough
that they could submit this report in the required format.

We have also sent out the INS (I600A) form with copies of our birth
certificates and marriage certificate. We wanted to send the application to
CCAI last week but my doctor forgot something on the medical paperwork so
I'm waiting for that to get corrected. I love my doc dearly but I was pretty
upset that this didn't get out last week. I will be picking up the new one today
so the app will FINALLY go out tomorrow!!

Fortunately, I've been in touch with CCAI and they've given us some things to
start on like the I600A form and getting some of the certificates we need.
Some of these have to be in a special format with something called an
apostille (I have no idea what that is but it costs extra! LOL).

We also have gotten our financing arranged and have been approved for our
loan.

As long as the application goes to CCAI tomorrow as planned, next week I
expect to be working on the next set of paperwork which will ultimately be the
dossier that gets sent to China. CCAI tells us that it generally takes 2-3
months for most people to get all their paperwork (and legwork) done and the
dossier to be submitted. We are shooting for 2 months as we would really
really like to have our dossier submitted by December if possible (Michael is
shooting for November ).

So that's the scoop for now. Another update in a couple of weeks!
