The Dommel's Adoption Journey

Go Back to Home Page
May/June 1999: Michael and I decide to pursue adoption. I had a
miscarriage in April and it was an extremely difficult experience for both of
us. I was approaching my 40th birthday and we were probably facing
medical intervention to achieve a pregnancy, which (of course) our
insurance will not cover. We had always talked about adopting a child so
we just decided to go ahead with it a bit earlier than we originally
anticipated.

I did a huge amount of research in the Internet and starting calling agencies
- screening them over the phone, getting information packets, references,
etc. We also start looking at the different programs available, both
Domestic and International.

July 1999: After talking with a social worker about Domestic adoption and
the laws surrounding permanent termination of rights for birthparents, we
decide that this was not our option. We were not prepared emotionally to
invest years pursuing a Domestic adoption with the fear that the birth
mother or father may have a change of heart after the adoption and pursue
regaining the child.

So, International adoption. But which country? How do you do this? How
much will it cost? A million questions!

We start looking at different countries, their respective laws regarding
qualifications for adopting (age, divorce, other children restrictions, etc.).
We also begin to realize that the health and care of the children varied
greatly from country to country as well. We decide, after all of these
considerations, to pursue a China adoption program.
