These days and since 9/11, those of us who travel have to think about airports a lot more than we'd like to, but I've found that with a little preparation and a lot of time, the airport experience needn't  be an ordeal. Time is the key. You've got to be sure that time is on yor side. You never want to be in a hurry.
If time is short and you're hurried, you're probably going to get Irritated, fidgety, and impatient. Chances are you're going to become short-tempered, which is what you never want to become at the airport. For International Flights I show up three and a half hours ahead of the flight's scheduled departure time;
for Domestic Flights at least two hours early. I'm polite, I'm courteous, and I wait patiently. I've found that what will get me through an airport most easily is politeness, professionalism, and patience. Dont be demanding, if you find yourself saying, "I do this all the time and never had a problem "Before", well, you've got a problem now. My carry on of choice is a soft sided "Pelican Case". It's got wheels, a handle, and a very nice touch- a seperate zipon-zipoff, laptop case. Though I can not prove it, I believe that having a professional looking, well cared for and neatly packed case  will help you at the airport. It creates, a positive impression, shows you're serious, and helps with the "impression", during inspection.
Couple that with your friendly, courteous demeanor and things should go "smoother".
