

The 2nd Michigan Volunteer Infantry regiment was mustered in 1861, and originally drawn largely from the extreme southern part of the State. The 2nd comprised of quite a few British North American from Upper and Lower Canada. The 2nd Original Colonel was Israel B.(Photo on Left)Few units equaled its record for non-stop combat; it was one of the handful of Union regiments who held firm at First Manassas, and its survivors stood at Appomatox Court House four years later.
The Regiment fought in both the Eastern and Western Campaign. A part of the 3rd then 9th Army Corps they served with distinction in many engagement from the start to the end of the American Civil War.

The 2nd Michigan Volunteer Infantry, both Veteran Volunteers and new recruits would fight valiantly for the rest of the war. The survivors returned to Washington, marched in the Grand Review Parade, and were mustered out on July 28th 1865.
