Spyware, malware, ad-ware, whatever you want to call it, could potentially do harm to your computer. Usually, these programs and plug-ins come packed with many freeware, and some reputable downloads. Usually, the companies who make the spyware pay the software companies to bundle their spyware in with there programs. So watch out for what you download on the internet. Spyware can take your personal information, such as address, phone number, credit card number, etc., and send or sell them companies. Some ad-ware, is harmless, only sending you a lot of ads in the form of pop-ups. But can still annoy you, sometimes sending adult content which is not suitable for your family's use. Spyware/ad-ware includes trojans, keyloggers, and tracking cookies, which can track your use and what you are typing. This can steal your password and other private information. So, to protect yourself, you should get ad-ware removal tools, and install a good firewall. Spybot: Search and Destroy, Lavasoft's Ad-aware, and Webroot Spy Sweeper are all good and legitimate removal tools. Beware for some removal tools, some are spyware themselves. Always look up a tool before you download it. Here's a list of sites which are helpful in learning about spyware. They are much more detailed than my summary.
