| Moonwind is a science fiction novel containing some elements of a love story. Bethkahn is an astral being destined to spend over ten thousand years stranded on the surface of the moon while trying to fix the troops broken ship. When the crew she is traveling with decides to go to earth and never returns, the ship decides it is best to allow Bethkahn to sleep through the years in order to ease her concerns and loneliness. Ten thousand years later the ship awakes her, warning her that they are no longer alone on the moon. Gareth and Karen are two teenage earthlings who have won a trip to the moon, so along with a group of adults in charge of Earths first military base in space, they pack their bags and go spend four weeks on the surface of the moon. Gareth is someone who likes to keep to himself, but Karen is extremely talkative and friendly. Their personalities immediately clash. During a routine outing, a mysterious moonwind occurs and a crew member is killed. After this incident, Gareth swears to have seen a womans silhouette among the gray moondust. No one believes him, but regardless of this, he continues to be obsessed with the thought of there being someone else on the moon with them. What complicates the story and gives it a twist of romance, which may make it appealing to both male and female readers, is that both Gareth and Bethkahn seem to have fallen in love. The ship warns Bethkahn that humans are going to bring her pain and suffering, but Bethkahn knows that Gareth is different. Gareth is able to see Bethkahn for what she isanother teenager just like himself, who is afraid of getting hurt by humans who do not understand her existence. Gareth feels that Bethkahn needs help and does not hesitate to offer it. Something to be greatly admired in this book is the way in which the author brings the setting to life for the reader to enjoy. When she describes the earth rising, it is truly a sight one wants to experience. Louise Lawrence has a vivid imagination and a natural gift for bringing these dreams to life through her writing.
