Why is seti important? I work for TV. TV is the first strong signal to the stars from Earth. So, arent I just helping to keep up the stream of intelligent RF flow from Earth?
Yes, and no. Work takes me all over the place, I'm a TV photographer. Recently we stood in the way of Hurricane Francis, the one where NASA took a beating- we lived to tell the tale- but 2.7 million other people evacuated the area. Perhaps they knew something we didnt? A while back, we were tornado-chasing in Oklahoma, and before that spent a bunch of time in Detroit's wonderful weather. Then I was chased by a torndao in Raleigh, North Carolina, and that was just the last year or so. Next, we're headed to Mt. Washington NH- home of the worlds worst weather. Sweeeeet...

when the meter reads 7 and up at night, go look outside!
I just set up a cache way out in the Adirondacks. It's like 8 miles back in the woods. Good luck finding that one!!! 1. They are out there. We will hear from them in the next 10000 years, my best guess. I cannot assume we run on the same time scale as they do. We will one day find the "galactic internet." Danger? There is no danger. Anyone who can cross space and time has no need for what we have here on this planet, so we need to call them up and invite them, now. Think of what they will offer us in trade for our being found! Perhaps they have out-thunk Einstein!
2. We should be transmitting constantly so others will find us. We can only assume they will be like us in general. It's irrelevant if they are dangerous; because that would be an inevitability that they would "get us" like the boogie-man. We should be sending out our location and our library info about our biology and our science.
3. This is the greatest human endeavour possible.
I think every computer sold today should have a small part devoted to helping seti.
