Mini Metrocard Vending Machines started appearing in late 2001. These small versions are located right next to their big brothers and can do the same things. The only difference is that the Mini's only take ATM and credit cards. This is to make transactions quicker at crowded stations.
Sources tell me that in the future they will refill standard unlimited ride cards and may also allow some of the unlimited ride features of the RFM to be used on your regular Metrocard. The special features of the RFM are that you can have value on the card that will allow the card to instantly function as a Pay-per-ride card when expired and allow two Unlimited Ride timers. The second one will be activated and the expiration date set the first time you use it after the first one expires. You can buy a NEW "second timer" once the first one expires (and therefore the second becomes the first). Since it is too early now, any of this is subject to change (except for the specifics on RFM refills as they are). |
