GAMMA PHI DELTA SORORITY INCORPORATED
HERSTORY History of Gamma Phi Delta Sorority, Incorporated 1943 "Peace and Harmony is our Motto, Refinement and Culture is our Aim" History In February of 1943, a group of dynamic women met at Lewis College of Business, (formerly Lewis Business College) located in Detroit, Michigan to discuss the need for an organization that would support and promote opportunities for young women who were striving for a better education. These women saw a need to support women that were obtaining higher learning at two year institutions. To meet this need, Elizabeth Garner, an instructor at the college, assisted by her sister, Violet T. Lewis, Lewis College of Business owner and President, founded the unique organization Gamma Phi Delta Sorority, a professional and business sorority. These dynamic women, Elizabeth Garner and Violet T. Lewis, along with Annie Blakemore, Lula Garner, Geraldine Harrison Perkins, Robelye Trumbo Dungey, Betrice Preston, Jean Myers, Odell Glover, Ivalu Lennear, Eurine Harrison, Ruby Tipton, and Mattie Willis are the Original Founding Pearls. Gamma Phi Delta Sorority is a Sisterhood of distinguished, congenial business and professional women. Through their talents and qualities, members aid and cultivate higher scholastic and ethical standards, provide social and recreational outlets, implement and administer services to people in need. Charities Gamma Phi Delta Sorority contributes annually to approved charitable organizations that are involved in serving humanity and whose objectives reflect our mission. We are particularly interested in working with organizations whose objectives are the elimination of economic, educational, vocational and social gaps that exist between the privileged and underprivileged. Our service to the community includes volunteer work in hospitals, nursing homes, public schools, tutoring, literacy and programs for the elderly. We offer support to the Red Cross, Little Red Door, March of Dimes, Sickle Cell Anemia, GAINS, Salvation Army and others. ![]() |
