Sonic and Tails get captured by Scratch and Grounder. They try to get the badniks to release them by recalling how they were created....cue flashback!
When Sonic breaks up a bounty hunter's convention, Robotnik decides he needs to deal with him by making a new robot: one that will be intelligent and evil, and programmed to destroy Sonic, that is, until he presses a wrong lever and Scratch is created. When Robotnik tries to clone Scratch, he presses another wrong lever, and Grounder appears. These two robots, (who Dr. R thinks are geniuses) he names the Super Special Sonic Search and Smash Squad, and sends them out to get Sonic. Then the story carries on into some of the tricks the badniks tried at first to catch him, and coming back to the present, Sonic and Tails escaping easily from the trap they were in.
