Unlike many of the other characters from Sonic, Princess Sally never appeared in any of the games. In fact, there wasn't even a monarchy on Mobius up until SatAM came along.
Despite this, the origins of Princess Sally could be buried deep in the Sonic past.......
In the first Sonic the Hedgehog books/ adventure gamebooks, there was a character called: 'Sally Acorn the Squirrel', who bore a remarkable resemblance to our Princess Sally.
Sally Acorn was no princess, but Sonic did have a crush on her at one point. Could this have been where the character ideas came from?? |

Sally was saved from the roboticizer at a young age, after her father, the King, was Roboticized. She grew up as a Freedom Fighter, fully aware about her father's fate.
When Sally had grown up a little, she met Sonic and they became friends. Well, actually, by the end of series 1 they were more than friends, and by the end of Series 2....well just take a look! |

The danger of using Sally as Sonic's girlfriend lay in the male audience: some guys didn't feel O.K watching a full-on snog in the middle of a Sonic cartoon. Even some parents complained that it was too forward for their children.....But the gamble the writers took paid off...big time!! Sally is now probably one of the best remembered characters in Sonic history...... |

Another reason she was probably so popular was because she wasn't your 'average princess': she was occasionally bigheaded, she could be smarmy and sarcastic; But she was also good with computers, down to earth, and didn't mind getting her hands dirty. Tails even looked up to her as a mother figure! All of these points gave her a universal appeal as a character. |
