HISTORY

Sylph have been together for at least two years. But some of this time has been under a different name and different members. Paul was in a band with David in year 9, which was called, ‘Curious Orange’, (Dan Keefe's Swedish funk-metal band). David left this band to start his own band. He got together with a friend called Andy and made Benzene. At this time Paul also left Curious Orange to join a band with a friend called Piers and later got nick to play bass. This band was called Indigo Flow. For one show David asked Paul if he would play the drums for a few Nirvana covers they had done. Paul agreed and as a result joined Benzene. Paul still kept up with Indigo Flow. As both bands were good friends they had a go at putting the two bands together. This didn’t really turn out as good as it could have. Piers left the band as they weren’t really getting much done. This left Paul, David, Andy and Nick in the band. It worked out that Nick was to leave the band as well just over time. This pretty much left the line up of Benzene, but now they had so many ideas.

They got a friend to play a second guitar part while David was singing this was the introduction of Richard to the band. Now as it stood there was only one band. This band was un-named and consisted of Paul, Andy, David and Richard. Over much discussion it was decided that the band would be called Sylph. During the next few weeks of the new creation they felt they wanted to explore as many new ideas as possible. They wanted to experiment with synths, two bassists and use samples to try to make a different sound in the music. Due to some complications, Andy could not continue to play in the band for a while. This left them with out a bassist. They all awaited Andy’s return. During Andy’s absence Gavin came into the band. He did so because the band needed their second bassist. Paul had spoken to David and asked instead of getting a second bassist why not get another guitarist, this would work because David could play bass. Paul later asked Gavin to be in the band.

Everyone got on with him and he fitted in really well. It was also at this time that David asked Louise if she would like to do second vocals and have a go at samples. She agreed and both Gavin and Louise where now in the band. Andy was back but didn’t show any commitment to the band like he did before his departure and was replaced by Nick. Who on the first band practice just fell into place.
I can’t really describe the sound of Sylph. The songs all pretty much sound a different style. You could describe them as being alternative, but that is a big genre. In some songs they use Mid 5’s, they use complex song structures and some songs are done in different time signature than just 4/4. Crazy hey? Well this is the end of the first history; it will probably be up dated and changed around a lot in the not too distant future.
