Featuring The Kris Day
Nobody really likes to talk about that sort of thing. But something's got to be said at some point. What it is, there's this day, a point in the continuum of every childhood, when that boy or girl (in this case, a girl) picks up a dagger and learns how to use it. What a twist. Nobody ever really sees it coming, least of all, the parents. But it happens every time. Some will have you believe that it's just part of becoming an adult. I'll tell you what it's really about. It's the Kris Day.
You think that there's just random kindness in the world. You believe that it could just reach out and touch you at any moment. And, in a sense, you are right; except that when you finally do feel that touch, something goes wrong. There's an extra motive behind it (there always is). That touch is not there because you are a good person and there's just natural kindness in the world, no. That touch is there because the person (the adult) behind it wants something from you. Usually, this something will be that which is not in his or her right to have (hence, taking candy from a baby). It is something that the adult lost a long time ago and desperately wants to get back (hence, taking the candy from a baby). Once the child feels this touch, she is gone. She is no longer a child. She looks around for her innocence, her naivity, and it's disappeared completely. Now, she begins to fear kindness in all of its forms because she must look for the motive behind it. She can't trust any stranger, especially those who have graduated to adulthood. If she's lucky, maybe she can still trust her own parents, maybe.
The saddest thing about the Kris Day is that it can occur at any time. It can happen right at the beginning of her consciousness. She might end up wielding the dagger straight from day one, ever since she can remember. She has been Kristened. Some people will say that she's been Krissed. But that's not quite accurate, because from this point on, she will be the one holding the kris. She is on her way to becoming an adult. She will hold the double edge herself, and point it at someone else. We can hope that she will refrain from doing this to a child, but in the end, it doesn't really matter because that child will disappear eventually anyway.
