MP3 Software - The Know How

Home | Software | Programs

Creating MP3's

To create MP3 files, there are various types of software available, which carries out various functions. Basically there are two processes -- Ripping and Encoding which are used to create MP3's. A single software may be used for both the processes or specialised software packs could be employed.

Ripping, also called Digital Audio Extraction is nothing but copying the song's file from the CD onto a hard disk and Encoding is a process by which the ripped song is compressed to the MP3 format. By encoding the songs, one can play them on the computers or take them along on various MP3 players.

MP3 files can also be made from conventional audio cassettes to avoid loss of old audio tracks.  This can be done by connecting the output of the cassette deck to the line-in or microphone jack of the sound card and record the music digitally on your computer, using any sound recording software. Then encode that file to create the MP3.

Writing MP3's to CD's

For doing this the system need to have a standard CD Burner. This is done so as to create MP3 CD's or Audio CD's.  The MP3 CD's contain MP3 files, whereas the Audio CD's contain WAV files in Track format. There are two ways to write MP3's to CD's:

  • Writing the MP3 files themselves onto a data CD in order to save them and clear some space on the hard disk. Then these MP3 files can be used on any computer.

  • Converting the MP3 files into full-size CD tracks and then burning them to an audio CD. This allows the user to listen to the MP3 files on any CD player.

The process of converting the MP3 files to full size CD tracks is knows as Decoding.
