| "Yes,sister that much we all knew without your helpful reminder!"she said sarcastically, much to the amazement of everyone present, not least Elenglinel, who scowled at her,her beautiful face darkened by the dislike flashing dangerously in her deep blue eyes. "Lalaithwen. You should not darken the mood of this fair evening with snide wordsnor should sisters and elves quarrel foolishly as do the young children of men "Galadriels deep voice, clear as bells and filled with the soft music of golden harps interrupted them with a gentle rebuke. "Yes my Lady,I am sorry"said Lalaithwen lowering her head and feeling slightly ashamed of her uncharecteristic irritability "As am I"added Elenglinel, though she looked darkly at her sister from under her sheet of silky primrose pale hair that hid her face. Galadriel nodded slightly but was slightly concerned,Elenglinel often attempted to provoke her sister..it did not take her powers of understanding thoughts to percieve that.but Lalaithwen never responded, unless it were to laugh softly as though not heeding the taunt.Gently Galadriel reached out to Lalaithwen with her powerful mind.Seeking to softly sweep aside the barely perceptible shadow that had fallen like a curtain between herself and Lalaithwen, hiding the darkness that dimmed the golden glow of her soul and sought to extinguish the light of her spirit.Galadriel was surprised to find that the curtain, though it felt as fragile as cobwebs was woven by a spider of steel,it seemed to push against Galadriels mind with the force of a heavy blownot wishing to intrude on the young maidens mind against her will,Galadriel withdrew her mind, but from that moment a corner of the shadow of doubt touched her mind also. Galadriel spoke again breaking the tension that had been almost visible,as she broke the link that had held Lalaithwens eyes locked with her own. "Lalaithwen,I summoned you many hours ago,why came you so late to your duties?" "Forgive me lady Galadriel, for you sent my brother, and he has long been absent from this land. There was great joy at our meeting.."Lalaithwen spoke halitingly, though barely refraining from flinching at the now utterly detestable mention of duties. She supposed it wasnt really a lie, more a half-truth but it was the first time she told anything more or less than the the full truth and it weighed upon her mind, adding to the darkness and despair of her troubled soul. "Very well, you are forgiven. Indeed perhaps I should have forseen that a reunion between you and your brother would lead to long delays!"smiled Galadriel, but she was uncertain in her heart;Lalaithwens proud eyes had seemed unwilling to meet her own and her words were heavy with guilt. Lalaithwen endured many years in Lothlorien, doing her duties and trying to appear happy. However, try as she might she could not conquer the darkness nor forget about her longing for the world outside, dreams of freedom that had previously been her hope, now were the cause of her despair. She was left feeling alone, wretched and depressed.Glimmers of freedom just beyond her reach taunted her daily until all that was left of her light was a faint flickering glow fighting with all that remained of her passionate spirit against the all-consuming shadow. It had come upon them slowly, the shadow,as a shadow had come into the hearts of the Noldor in Valimar, creeping into their hearts dulling even the gold of their beloved mallorn trees, softly whispering poisonous words as they slept.Galadriel held it back as she could but there was something missing, she needed the light of Lalaithwen, but she had no light left to give "Lalaithwen" she awoke suddenly drawn out of a dark dream. She looked around, with eyes still keen though they had lost the light that had glowed within, but could see nobody |
