| "Haldir, when do you next leave." "Tommorow..but"he began "Take me with you!"she implored, her green eyes beseeching him "Sister of my heart,I cannot! You are a maiden,a hand-maiden of the Lady of the Wood, your place is not in battle, nor would our father allow it"he hated to refuse her the one thing she ever asked of him, especially with those beautiful eyes holding his own, begging him with a plea more eloquent than any that even her moving words could manage..ut knowing it was beyond his power anyway. For a moment she held his gaze, then, seeing no hope the emerald eyes filled momentarily with rare tears. Not wishing to cause him pain greater than that she saw in his eyes even as he denied her her desire, she blinked them away, casting her pleading eyes ,still alight with the passionate fire of longing, down .Haldir saw them nontheless and it grieved his heart deeply to see the sister he loved above any other weeping as she never did.She had a spirit of light and of fire and the flame of joy within her was rarely quenched, however temporarily and to see it drowned in tears was unheard of. Having parted with Haldir Lalaithwen was left alone surrounded by the trees, the silver bars of her golden-roofed prison. She could no longer hold back the tears and they flowed freely down her pale face as she stood perfectly still as though enchanted. Her eyes looking up at the mesh of branches that stood between her and the sky where clouds wandered seemingly free, but under the control of the wind, envying the free flying birds that swooped among them, singing songs of freedom they could never achieve. I am like a cloudthough my home is fair and my lord kind, I am trapped, doomed to forever stay here walking always the same paths. How I long to be a bird..an eagle! To spread my wings at last and fly where I would, heedless of any commands "None must know these thoughts. She spoke aloud, though she knew it not "They would not understand, like the cloud,I appear free, they would never understand.."then a thought hit her, angry, blamingit hit her so hard she almost cried aloud No,none must ever knowwhat right have you to feel like this? They brought you in,cared for you and this is how you repay them? With hopeless dreams of impossible freedom, would you then leave behind those who love you, unearned though that love may be?Nay!You must stay forever here,a source of light in the hearts of those who love thee...that they may enjoy the freedom you have notyourself earned. It may be that your light will fade, and you will wilt as do even the golden Elanor in tine, but this is your fate, and you can never escape it. She wept anew at the dark whisper that now clouded her previously clear, happy mind. She had always dreamt of freedom, but never thought about what it would involve, now the light of hope that had glowed bright in her heart began to fade and despair started to knaw with its blackened teeth at the corners of her heart. She knew she wa s a light, part of the light that illuminated Lothlorien she could never leave the home that she loved in darknessnever. Having dried her tears Lalaithwen went to Galadriel wondering what dull task she must do this time "Lalaithwen!Youre late"remarked Elenglinel(quite smugly,Lalaithwen thought)she was sitting in the talan with the several other hand maidens all of whom smiled at Lalaithwen as her golden head came through the hole in the floor, followed swiftly by the rest of her slender frame.Lalaithwen was in no mood for her sisters subtle taunting today, and turned to her angrily.Elenglinel was right, for one thing and Lalaithwen, having determined to try her hardest realised that turning up very late for a summons from her lady was not exactly a very good start. |
