| None knew her origins, where she came from, who she was. They found her one day while patrolling the borders of Lothlorien,a young elf-maiden sleeping peacefully under the eaves of the magic wood. Her skin was pale and delicate,as the petals of white lillies. She was like a flower herself, not yet come to bloom but still beautiful and full of promise of beauty to come. Her bright eyes were green and sparkled like the jewels of the Noldor long ago,her fine hair, which grew down to her slender waist was golden as sunlight, richer than the purest of metals,as magnificent, soe said as the hair of the Lady Galadriel herself. Seeing her,so fair and so innocent the elves were filled with love and a joy they did not understand, then Hitharlin, their captain awakened her gently, seeing them she was not afraid but laughed with delight at finding some others to be with, and the elves smiled, their hearts rejoicing at the sound.Finding that she was alone and knew nothing of any family they wondered but pitied her and determined with the consent of their lady, that she should live as one of them, adopted daughter of Hitharlin who loved her deeply from the moment when first she laughed, and who named her Lalaithwen- maiden of joy, for her own laughter and the happiness she brought to the hearts of others. She grew to be fair indeed, fairer than any save Galadriel herself, beautiful and joyful as the bright morning sunlight on the golden mallorn trees of that land.Galadriel loved her as did all the elves of the land, save one only: Elenglinel who was daughter by birth of Hitharlin and Elenal who had taken Lalaithwen as their daughter when she was first found, and who gave her her name. She was a hand-maiden of Galadriel as was Lalaithwen, and was jealous of her sisters favour with that lady and for the love given to her by all,and especially their parents and brother Haldir. Lalaithwen ran swift and graceful as a deer, long hair streaming behind her like a golden river, suddenly Haldir appeared before her, and, unable to stop despite her elven grace she ran straight into him.Surprised, but maintaining his catlike reactions he caught her by the shoulders, stopping her in her tracks.Seeing his expression of surprise she laughed, her hair now loose about her shoulders and in her dancing eyes "H..hello brother! What are you doing back?"she asked him, very slightly out of breath. She was surprised, now she had stopped laughing, to see him back so soon from hunting the orcs they had found --far too close to the borders of Lothlorien for comfort "Mae govannen little sister,I was seeking you at Lady Galadriels bidding"he avoided her question, smiling into her beautiful face. She was far too glad to see him to notice his evasiveness,or to question him persistently as she usually did. "Well, you found me.But has the captain of Lothlorien nothing better to do than run errands!?"she laughed, throwing her arms around him happily. "Indeed I did.And I have,I desired to see you my sister for I have not seen you for many months. Now,will you keep your lady waiting?"he asked her fondly brushing golden strands from her face, still slightly surprised,as he always was by her unrestrained greeting "I am glad indeed you chose this errand, for, though it has in truth been but a little while as we would account it,I have missed you Haldir! But now I must go to my lady for Iam late, that was the cause for the manner of our meeting"she laughed again as she so often did thinking of their slightly undignified reunion "Nay Lalaith, you would have been running wether late or not.You are ever running wild sister, instead of atteding your duties"he said, smiling at first but growing sterner as he touched on the subject that was the only cause of disagreement between them. For a moment Lalaithwens smile faded and her merry eyes were darkened a little.Duty, she came to dislike that word more than any other.freedom, she longed for freedom with all her heart longing to follow her brother to adventures and danger,to explore the lands outside of Lothlorien.Fair indeed though her home land was,and greatly though she loved running among its golden trees, she was allowed that freedom less and less often, and she longed to see other lands and other peoples..to be free. |
