Sing Me To Sleep: Task 3
"Lullabies are a universal expression of love.  They are soothing, reasurring and relaxing." - Hanna Yaffe
Objective:
We will discover the significance of a lullaby and its effect on sleeping.  Do lullabies play a role in our sleeping conditions?  Do they, perhaps, play a role in dreaming?
1) First, read a research project done by Monique C., a student from the Selah School District, in Washington D.C.  Click Here: "The Effect of Music vs. Silence on Sleeping."
When you are finished, answer whether you agree or disagree with Monique's hypothesis, and why.

2) I want you to search the World Wide Web for more information regarding lullabies.  Find out the significance of lullabies, and their role in culture (not just our culture).  Do lullabies have anything to say about relationships between individuals?  Are lullabies just for babies? You can hand in your responses in class.

3) After researching the significance of lullabies, listen to a lullaby from
A Midsummer Night's Dream, Act 2, Scene 2, (lines 4-30) sung by the Fairies to Titania.  To listen, Click Here.  (Scroll down to the song sung by Gillian Humphreys!!!)

Answer the following questions...

a) Is this song sung in a way that might cause someone to have pleasant dreams or bad dreams?  Do the words in the song indicate the same?

b) After listening to the lullaby how would you interpret the relationship between Titania and her Fairies?

c) Does the lullaby signify anything about the world in which Titania lives?
Hand your responses in during class.
