Saturday evening

Well, the House has finally settled down after an afternoon of pandemonium. Dr. Rayne has disappeared again - off chasing a wild hare, I suspect. Perhaps, simply to find reason to be away from the turmoil he's caused. I'm still worried, but I'll hold my tongue for a while.

He was gone before anyone else was up. No one was pleased to see the mountain of case files he left on the conference table on a Saturday morning. Then he called Miss Alex at about 3 pm to inform her that she was going to have to replace him at the Regents' charity thing in Berkeley tonight. One rarely sees Miss Alex panic, but she did this afternoon. Every item of evening wear, both hers and Miss Julia's, is heaped in the middle of her bedroom floor. She and Miss Julia redid her hair three times.

Finally, I had to take her in hand. We sorted through the pile and I found a nice, black, beaded gown on the bottom - no ironing, no fuss, no muss - only a little hem repair. There's not much one can do to beads, and they can cover a multitude of sins. She was concerned that she had worn it only last month, but Miss Julia and I convinced her that if she borrowed Julia's burgundy velvet wrap and wore her own faux rubies, no one would really notice or care.

So Miss Alex is on her way. I have no idea what the others are up to, including my employer, but he may soon face open rebellion. I hope, if that happens, it's while I'm in NYC.
