Dear Lizzie:
Well, I guess I'm the last person you ever expected to hear from. I mean, let's face it, if it wasn't for Nick, the two of us would probably never have been friends, much less got along. I know you don't always approve of my and Nick's friendship, but believe me when I tell you this: Nick is in serious trouble, has been for months, and if there's a chance he will talk to me about it, even briefly, then I'm not going anywhere. But I do need your help with something, which is the reason for this letter. If it helps, don't think of it as a favor to me, but for Nick. Only he can never know about it.
You know, of course, about the rivalry between the two of us, the games we used to play during basic training? I'm sure Nick has told you, particularly after that one time when we ended up restricted to barracks when you came out to visit.
Well, the thing is, Nick gave me another challenge- find out something about this guy, Derek Rayne, that he could possibly use. In what context, I don't know, but it was an interesting challenge and so I took it up. But now, I'm thinking that the information I gave to Nick was probably not something that he should know.
I found this gossip column article, which seemed pretty harmless, Rayne in an interesting position with an attractive young lady. Nothing interesting there, except for the fact that there was one other person in the photo. The judge at Nick's trial.
I thought it was funny, and I hinted at it in a letter to Nick, thinking that maybe he'd get a kick out of it, you know, the lengths this guy would go to to help him out. But now, I think it might have been a stupid mistake.
I talked to Nick on the phone last night, and he seemed really quiet. Kind of like he used to get before a mission. And something scared me. I didn't think I had given him enough information to actually do anything with, but the way he's talking, he's planning something. I guess I'm worried that he's going to do something that he'll regret.
Can you run interference for me? Throw him off track, somehow, maybe distract him so he doesn't do anything stupid?
