PERSONAL AND CONFIDENTIAL MEMORANDUM * DO NOT FILE *

Re: Nicholas R. Boyle - Candidacy for Initiate Status
My dear Sir Edmund:
Am I that transparent? I have taken your missive to heart and am setting a new course - a decision I was about to reach without your kind advice.
You may have nothing to worry about. While Mr. Boyle is slipping into the household nicely and is developing satisfactory relationships with Fr. Callaghan, Miss Walker, and Miss Moreau, he seems to heartily dislike me on a personal level. I shall continue to give him all the assistance that he will accept. I shall also divorce myself from any illusions that I may have had that he is a duplicate of his father and from any memories that I have of his father's wishes for him. It will be a clean slate. I shall treat him as Nick Boyle, a competent, but troubled young man whom I have recently met for the first time. Moreover, I intend to test his mettle.
However, I shall openly admit to you that I, personally, need someone like him in this house's security position. No one whom you have sent over the past eight years has proven even adequate for the job. To be blunt they haven't been worth a tinker's dam. It is better that I do it myself than follow someone about to pick up the pieces. Errors of any sort can cost us dearly, as we both well know. Unfortunately, I cannot continue to do so much longer. Nick Boyle meets all requirements - medical, military, and weapons training, and a pilot's license to boot. If he chooses to petition, I shall most assuredly support his application and be more than willing to mentor him.
Regarding to your last comment: Margaret Hamilton and I enjoy each other's company. It is a mature, adult relationship with honesty as its anchor - as I assume is your own with a certain lady who occupies an expensive Mayfair flat for which a Mr. Tremayne-Edmunds writes the checks. I have noted that she bears neither the name Mrs. Tremayne-Edmunds nor Miss Tremayne-Edmunds nor any variation thereof. What were we saying about covering our tracks?
Yours obedient servant,
Derek Rayne
