Re: Angel Island salvage efforts
The efforts to retrieve what we can from the ruins of the SF House proceed ahead of schedule. Despite the devastation, I admit to being surprised at how much has survived, some even totally undamaged. We should be able to have the service, reconsecrate, and break ground for the chapel by the 12th - one month. It seems an appropriate date. Please inform Mme. Rayne. It will set her mind much at ease, and will free you of her threat to request assistance from certain highly placed personages.
Dr. Rayne's bedroom safe has been located, undamaged. I am forwarding its contents. Amongst other things it, contained: a copy of his will, a copy of the original Spanish land grant and subsequent US deed to the island, his Legacy journal for the past year, a painting that he wished to go to his mother, and his last communication. Although his last letter was addressed to me, I see no reason why you should not read it. Apparently, via his majordomo, he managed to get other items out as well.
I spoke with Mr. Fitzgerald yesterday re: why he had not reported this to either us or to Mr. Boyle. His explanation was that he was trying to locate the young woman mentioned in the enclosed letter. Evidently, after the destruction of the house, Ms. Perez fled to Mexico. With her criminal record, she was afraid she would be blamed. I cannot agree with Mr. Fitzgerald's "go-it-alone" reasoning, but I do understand it under the circumstances. This House bred independent thinkers. We have now put our full resources into an effort to find Aurelia Perez.
We should have a full inventory for you within the fortnight. Each item is being blessed "in situ" before being touched. I know there will be significant disputes between the Legacy and the Luna Foundation over many of these items. I leave that to you. I want no part of it. I merely investigate, retrieve, and bless.
We have found a few personal items, which belonged to Mr. Boyle, Ms. Moreau, and Dr. Corrigan and have returned them directly to their owners. I have also offered them all a Legacy sanctuary to escape the media frenzy caused by that blasted newspaper story about the cult link - which my presence caused. I must find a way to put a stop to that.
Along with the inventory I shall be forwarding my personal evaluations of Ms. Moreau, Mr. Boyle, and Dr. Corrigan's current mental and emotional states. Each has been under close observation, as have my own people and the household staff, for any adverse affects caused by the portal. So far, all seems well on that front.
On a personal note:
I shall shortly be informing the Council of this by official means. However, I feel obliged to give warning. When this affair has been set in order, I intend to resign as Chief Investigator and return to my priestly duties. It may simply be a sabbatical from the Legacy, or it may be permanent. I do not yet know. All I do know is that I do not feel as though we have won here. We may have stopped the Apocalypse, but to do so we have sacrificed our greatest champion, and not only that, we must allow the reputation of that valiant and honourable man to be dragged through the mud. It leaves a bad taste in my mouth - it is disreputable, and it is wrong.
I feel that it has broken my spirit to continue the fight. It is my fear that there will be many others besides myself who will feel the same. Therefore, it is my suggestion that the Council be very liberal with the offering of sabbaticals and with assistance in temporary placements and relocations.
I cannot help but wonder if this was the intent of the Darkside, and yet, I cannot help how I feel. It was an immense blow to see the Boston House decimated, but it has happened before. However, to see the ruins of this House and to know the tragedy and the heroism that was enacted here, and to realise that we were all a part of allowing it to happen has quite overwhelmed my strength and determination. We are not fools - there should have been another way.
It is a Pyrrhic victory that has brought nothing but desolation to my soul.
Pax vobiscum,
Joseph Thomas, Ordo Crucis Rosae
