Technically, this isn't an FAQ.  I don't ask questions and then provide the answers.  Instead, I just list the facts as I know them and that, as a fan, I find interesting.  Hopefully, you will too.
This will always be a work in progress.

Highlights in Leon Russell's Career ( IMHO)

The 1950s
Leon played in Tulsa nightclubs from the age of 14.
Moved to Los Angeles at 17 to do the same.
He and his band toured with and backed
Jerry Lee Lewis for a while.
Legend has it that the pseudonym, Leon Russell, came from a borrowed i.d. card. He had to misrepresent his age in order to make a living, playing in Los Angeles bars while he was still under age.

Update - In a recent article in a UK magazine,
Record Collector (#282 February  2003),
Leon says that the name, Leon came from an I.D.
he had borrowed from "a cajun guy called Leonel."

The 1960s
Became a member of the Wrecking Crew, an elite group of studio musicians, which also included Hal Blaine and Glen Campbell.  In November 2007 the Wrecking Crew, including Leon, were inducted into the Musicians Hall of Fame in Nashville, TN.

Session player for Phil "Wall of Sound" Spector.
Band leader of the Shindogs, the house band on the Shindig TV series
Other famous Shindogs were: Glen Campbell and Delaney Bramlett.
Toured with Paul Revere and the Raiders; filling in on keyboards while Paul vacationed with Uncle Sam as a conscientious objector, circa 1961.
Saved Joe Cocker's professional career in the United States by organizing and leading the band on the infamous Mad Dogs and Englishmen tour.
Member of the Oklahoma Mafia band which included:

Leon on keyboards, vocals
Levon Helm on mandolin/vocals
Bobby Keys on sax
Carl Radle on bass
Jesse Ed Davis on guitar
Jimmy Markham

I've only read about this one.
I would love to hear from anyone who has seen or heard this album!

Played keyboards on the Rolling Stones' Let It Bleed
Leon, the Johnny Appleseed of Home Recording Studios, built his first one, Skyhill Studios, at his home in Hollywood, CA.
Played keyboards in Delaney and Bonnie & Friends.
Leon says he played bass (not keyboards) on The Byrds' Mr. Tambourine Man.
He played sessions with some of the major artists/bands/producers of the day:

Frank Sinatra
Herb Alpert
Joe Cocker
The Rolling Stones
Phil Spector

The 1970s
Established himself as a major live performer;
selling out many stadium shows.
According to his official biography at the Leon Russell Records site,
Billboard Magazine declared Leon the top concert attraction,

world-wide for 1973.

Elton John opened for Leon during his first tour of the United States. Lynyrd Skynyrd, Z Z Top, and the Gap Band have also opened shows or otherwise shared the stage with Leon. Leon also introduced Elton to Bob Dylan.

Leon and Mary Russell performed on the 20th episode of Saturday Night Live May 15, 1976 on with guest hostess Dyan Cannon. Songs performed were Satisfy You and Daylight from The Wedding Album .

The Homewood Video Concert

Originally aired in 1971 on PBS, actually KCET in LA at the Vine Street Theatre on Hollywood and Vine!  A theatre with a little studio in the back part of the building.  Not there anymore! It is really billed as the Vine Street Theatre presents Homewood, but the on air guy nicknames it Session right at the start of the studio intro's!
They actually shot 6 hours, but only broadcast 1 hour exactly!

Unscripted and Unrehearsed!

Now - this is a fact - it was the first national broadcast of a "stereo"
rock and roll performance - that's why Leon agreed to do it!

Billed as Session - Leon Russell and some close friends.

Leon was prominently featured at George Harrison's Concert for Bangla Desh, the first major rock benefit concert.
This event preceded Live Aid by more than a decade.
Leon's performance of Jumpin' Jack Flash/Young Blood and his duet
with George Harrison on Beware of Darkness were show stoppers. Jumpin' Jack Flash continues to be a signature tune for him.

The all-star line up included:

George Harrison
Ringo Starr
Leon Russell
Eric Clapton
Bob Dylan
Billy Preston
Badfinger
Don Nix
Don Preston*
Carl Radle
Jim Horn
Jim Keltner
Jesse Ed Davis
Ravi Shankar

*A little known fact is that there are two Don Prestons.  Don Preston, the guitarist, played at the Bangla Desh concert. Don Preston, the keyboardist for Frank Zappa, did not. FYI.

Leon and Denny Cordell founded Shelter Records, a breeding ground for new talent. Among the distinguished artists who signed with Shelter were:

Phoebe Snow (Poetry Man)
Tom Petty
J. J. Cale (After Midnight, They Call Me the Breeze , etc.)
Mary McCreary (Mrs. Russell, for a while)
Freddie King
Dwight Twilley (I'm on Fire)
Don Nix (Goin' Down)
The Gap Band (who also backed Leon on tour)
Willis Alan Ramsey (Muskrat Love)

Leon co-hosted the first and otherwise appeared at many subsequent Willie Nelson 4th of July Picnics. These shows helped to bridge the gap between hippies and rednecks in the 1970's.
Headlined a New Year's Eve concert in Dallas, Texas with Willie Nelson and Kinky Friedman as opening acts.
Leon shocked just about everyone and became the toast of Nashville when he recorded the first Hank Wilson country record. This was at the peak of his popularity as a rock performer. Most popular artists play it safe with their careers by restricting themselves to a single genre of music. Leon became known as a musical chameleon; delighting his fans and
confusing his critics who just didn't get it

Country artists, like Mark Collie , have credited Leon and his Hank Wilson's Back Volume I album with inspiring them
to pursue country music careers.

Created Sheltervision, a video branch to Shelter Records.  It was an idea that was way before its time and never achieved its potential. This was circa 1975. Long before most Americans even knew what a VCR was.
Denny Cordell made an appearance on a rock music talk show to promote Sheltervision.  Unfortunately, the show's host was more eager to comment on how Leon's voice "is a mess" and did not listen to Denny's message of the coming home video revolution.  This was circa 1975 or 1976.

I believe the show was called Speakeasy,
hosted by Woodstock alum, Chip Monk.
Leon hosted a one-shot video music program called Rock Show on CBS
The program airred on December 8, 1978.
Founded Paradise Records which was a training ground for
members of Concrete Blonde and for Steve Ripley.
Ripley became a member of country supergroup,
 TheTractors
and a studio wizard in his own right!
Converted a former church into the Church Studios in Tulsa
This studio is now the proud home of Steve Ripley & the Tractors.

Joined the Willie Nelson tour at the peak of Willie's popularity.
In 1979 Leon filled in on keyboards for Willie's sister, Bobby, during this tour.
Recorded One for the Road , the mega hit double album with friend Willie Nelson . A video was filmed around this time and finally
released on DVD in 2002.
He wrote and recorded major hits, FM radio staples, and fan favorites that became standards for the period:

Superstar (with Delaney Bramlett)
A Song for You
This Masquerade
Blues Power (with Eric Clapton)
Dixie Lullaby (with Chris Stainton)
I Put a Spell on You
Shoot Out on the Plantation
Delta Lady
Roll Away the Stone (with Greg Dempsey)
Stranger in a Strange Land (with Don Preston)
Out in the Woods
Lady Blue
Back to the Island
Bluebird
Lost Inside of You (with Barbara Streisand for A Star is Born)
and many many more....

Among the artists Leon became socially or professionally
associated with in the 1970's were:

Willie Nelson
Bob Dylan
George Harrison
Eric Clapton
Denny Cordell
Dave Mason
John Lennon
Freddie King
Cheech Marin
Gary Busey
The Nitty Gritty Dirt Band
Barbara Streisand
Badfinger

Many major articles were published about him during this decade;
including an interview in Rolling Stone magazine.

The opening bars of Rollaway the Stone, were used in the movie  Alice Doesn't Live Here Anymore.
Unfortunately, the audio clip ends before Leon's vocal begins.
Made two appearances on Wolfman Jack's Midnight Special (NBC).
First as co-host on the Willie Nelson Fourth of July Picnic and on the second appearance hosting video footage of himself and
the Gap Band that was taken in his home studio.
Leon played the voice of an evangelic radio preacher in the movie, When You Comin' Back Red Ryder

The 1980s
Toured with the progressive bluegrass band, New Grass Revival
The live album and video from this tour featured knockout
bluegrass versions of the Beatles ' I've Just Seen a Face and the Rolling Stones' Jumpin' Jack Flash.
The Live at Gilley's CD is from the final days of this collaboration.

A studio album from this period, Rhythm & Bluegrass: Hank Wilson Vol. 4 ,  was released in 2001.

Re-located Paradise Records to Tennessee as an independent label (previously distributed by Warner Brothers) and released Hank Wilson II and Solid State

Toured with Edgar Winter on a duo bill. A performance at the Main Street Cafe was filmed and released in Europe on video. In 2002, Classic Pictures Entertainment, Ltd. released this video performance on DVD in the UK and the USA.

Leon made his first appearance on Austin City Limits (PBS).
He shared the stage with Edgar Winter on this program
Recorded on August 17, 1986 and first aired in 1987.

In a separate segment of the same program, a very young
Steve Earle performed songs from his Guitar Town album.

Played dates in the U.S., Canada, Brazil, and Moscow.

Sam Bush and Edgar Winter appeared on this CD.

Two videos were filmed for the Anything Can Happen CD: Anything Can Happen and No Man's Land.

Leon was interviewed on ABC's In Concert tv show. Unfortunately, he did not perform and the unseen and unheard interviewer appeared to be more interested in Leon's social views rather than his music. Segments of one or two of his videos as well as a clip from the Mad Dogs and Englishmen movie were shown but not in their entirety.

The Shelter albums finally made their debut in CD format. Some were released with bonus tracks.

Leon sang the theme for a very short lived NBC tv show, Flesh 'n' Blood (1991)
The song was co-written with the show's star, David Keith.

John, we fans miss you and wish you the
very best in all you do!

Songs Inspired By The Passion of The Christ.

In March 2004 Jon Woodhead replaced Brian Mansell on guitar. John had toured previously with Leon & Mary Russell and can be heard on the Americana album. I hope to add more information on JW shortly.

Later this year look for the Caravan of Dreams Tour with Leon Russell & Hal Ketchum.

http://www.juneauempire.com/stories/082604/thi_halketchum.shtml

snippet from article:

In November, the band will begin "Caravan of Dreams," a tour with Leon Russell and Double Trouble. Each show will be set up like a revue, with each band playing a set, then merging for a collective finale.

I have no details when or exactly how long this tour will last.

WWIII

The third gathering of the Leon Lifers at Wild Woodsprings Lodge in Missouri is on for October 29 & 30, 2004. Follow the link for details.

Two classic Leon songs are featured in the soundtrack to the Michael Caine/Christopher Walken movie Around the Bend.
They are Roll Away the Stone and A Song for You.

AD 2005

Newlywed Jon Woodhead took his leave from the band. Newcomer, Jason Speegle, joins in May.

Two classic rock films make their DVD debut in October:
Concert For Bangladesh

In November Leon performed in Japan. There are rumors of a return visit and a possible European tour.

Leon's version of Stranger in a Strange Land was prominently featured on two
first run prime-time TV shows:

House MD: episode TB or Not TB

Cold Case Files: episode Honor.

AD 2006

Jaime Babbitt has joined the band and doing an outstanding job on backing vocals and percussion.
Grant Whitman has returned to the drum chair, while continuing to dirve the bus.

AD 2007

Jason "Curly" Speegle played his last show as Leon's guitarist on April 20th in Falls Church, VA. We all hate to see him go.

Debuting at Gruene Hall in New Braunfels, TX is new Leon guitarist, Scot Boyer. It's reported that he walked on stage without any rehearsal with the band. His only preparation was listening to a live concert tape for three weeks before this show.

Leon Russell and Marc Benno's Look Inside The Asylum Choir  is finally released on CD in the UK.  Available from Amazon.com & cduniverse.com. Highly recommended.

In October, Leon's Paradise Records that were released via Warner Bros. have been reissued on CD for the first time by Wounded Bird Records.  These CDs are:
The Wedding Album - Leon & Mary Russell
Make Love To The Music - Leon & Mary Russell
Americana - Leon Russell
Live And Love - Leon Russell
The Live Album - Leon Russell with New Grass Revival

Note that Solid State still has not been been released on CD.  It was released on Paradise Records after the split from Warner Bros. The Wounded Bird re-releases are  only of the WB/Paradise albums. The other major post WB Paradise release, Hank Wilson Vol. II has been re-released on CD through Leon Russell Records.

October brought another band lineup change: Scott "Smokey" Boyer, a dynamic finger picking guitarist, returned home to Alabama.

His successor, Chris Simmons, is an equally talented musician with more of a rock and roll leaning.  Brian Lee is an outstanding keyboardist who has joined the band.  It is good to hear a second keyboardist in the band again.

In November The Wrecking Crew, a group of studio musicians who played on many of the hits from the early Sixties of which Leon Russell was a prominent member, were inducted into the Musicians Hall Of Fame.  Other well known Wrecking Crew members are: Glenn Campbell, Hal Blaine, and Carol Kaye.
