It is essential to note that, to practice independently as a doctor in
Canada, you should be licensed by the Canadian medical council.
The Immigration and medical council licensing are inter related but
they are separate processes. The medical council does not assist in the
immigration processes.
International Medical Graduates (IMG)
The Medical council of Canada defines an "International Medical
Graduate" as a physician whose basic medical degree was conferred
by a medical school located outside Canada and the United States, that
is listed in the most recent issue of the World Directory of Medical
Schools published by the World Health Organization (WHO), or a graduate
from a USA School of Osteopathic Medicine accredited by the American
Osteopathic Association.
Canadian citizens who have taken their medical training outside
Canada or the USA are considered to be IMGs, whereas foreign citizens
who have graduated in medicine from Canadian medical schools are
considered to be Canadian medical graduates.
Information about registration, immigration and other necessary
details are given in the subsequent sections.
