Detailed Summary

A young girl is falling. She is very calm in spite of what is happening. A crow flies by her and is concerned. She hugs the bird and wonders why she isn't frightened. The crow then tries to save her by tugging on her dress. The girl tells it its no use, but thanks it anyway. She continues falling, and only cries out when she sees the approaching ground.

In an old building, a young woman with long black hair is walking along the corridor with a box full of art supplies. She is smoking, and has angel-like wings and a bright halo. She walks past a room where the door is slightly ajar and notices something so she takes a few steps back. To her suprise, she sees a large cocoon in the room. She panicks and drops her cigarette and box and runs down the stairs, only to come back up to stamp the cigarette out, then continues on her way down.

Two more of the haibane arrive on a bike. Kana is pedaling and Hikari is hitching a ride on the back. They find out that the others are already there. They see that Reki has made a notice to keep the 'young feathers' out of the cocoon room, and Kana states that she thinks it'll have the opposite effect. Upstairs, Reki has taped off the cocoon area and is trying to keep the young haibane from getting in. Hikari and Kana arrive, and Kana chases them away and tells Reki that shes too soft.

The three haibane enter the room, where two other haibane, Kuu and Nemu are alreday there. Kuu is very exicted at the prospect of having a brother or sister and dances around.
Reki says she thinks they should tidy up the room. Two of the young haibane make it in and yell out that its a monster egg. lol. Reki chases them off again.

The scene changes to inside the cocoon. The girl is floating in some kind of liquid. She wakes up and wonders if shes having a dream. She is suprised that she can breath in the liquid. She then scratches away some of the inside layer of the cocoon with her hand. Voices can be heard from the other side of the wall of the cocoon.

In the room, the haibane have finished tidying up. Reki gets some strings to pull for lookout duty. Kana asks why they can't break open the cocoon with a hammer,, but Reki tells her that the haibane must break it open themselves or they will not be strong. Kuu then says that she hears a crack coming from the cocoon, and sure enough there is another one. They all gather around the cocoon and then it starts leaking liquid, before exploding liquid everywhere!

The scene then moves to the girl waking up in a bed. She realises she is no longer dreaming, but before she can think too much about it, a group of haibane walk in all talking at once. Reki introduces herself to the girl and asks about her cocoon dream. The girl says that she was falling but she doesn't remember much of it. Kuu says that she was floating in her dream, so she was named Kuu, hikari was surrounded by light, Kana was swimming like a fish and Nemu was sleeping. Just then the end of Rekis cigarette falls and Reki thinks of 'Rakka' Fall'. So the girls name becomes Rakka.

Hikari then takes out a halo from a mold. She places it above Rakkas head and it hovers for a bit, before falling off. So the halo is then temporally suspended above Rakkas head by means of a wire and cardboard, which the others find rather amusing. Then Kana hears the bell, and says she has to go back to work, so do the others so they leave Reki and Rakka alone.

Rakka asks Reki where she is and what haibane are. Reki moves her wings to show Rakka that they're real and tells Rakka hers will grow soon. She asks if Rakka is feeling any pain on her back. Rakka says she feels a bit but she thought she slept wrong. Reki then sees that there are two large dark patches on Rakkas back, and says she'll go and get some ice for when they start growing.

As Reki gets the ice, Rakkas breathing increases and she sounds like shes in pain. Reki puts the ice on Rakkas back, and Rakkas says she wants to see in a mirror but Reki says that will just make it more painful. Rakka then asks if haibane are human. The mood turns darker in this episode. Reki says she doesn't know what haibane are, but they call themselves haibane 'Ash Wings'. Rakka gets destressed and cries she wants to go home, but Reki tells her that even if her family are out there, its unlikely tey'll recognise her now. Rakka says she was supposed to be a normal girl. At that moment her wings start to be 'born. Blood trickles down from her left 'lump'. She starts screaming in pain, and Reki runs to gets the first aid kit. She drops it though but picks up the tape and wraps it around her own thumb, telling Rakka to bite it so she doesn't bite her tongue.

Then comes the most painful scene I have seen in anime, the 'wing birth' scene. And so, in a spray of blood and oil, Rakkas wings are born and she screams out.

Rakka wakes up to find Reki brushing and cleaning her wings with some kind of ointment. Rakkas friendship with Reki starts here, as Reki is performing the mother role. They talk a little, and Reki tells Rakka that her wings are not black, nor white, but a beautiful grey.

The next morning, Rakka discovers that her hair is static to her halo. Reki finds this amusing, but Rakka doesn't and tries to stick it down with Rekis hairbrush. Rakka then notices her wings are beautifully clean and touches them. She smiles. Reki pours tea and welcomes Rakka to 'Old Home'
