After a week of controversy Barnstoneworth Athletic got back to the field on Saturday in the second round of the B division Orange All Age Soccer competition but could not overcome Canobolas Pink Bits at Brabham Park.
"I think just about everyone in Orange has heard the tape of the conversation between two of our senior players" said captain Powell. In the conversation, Powell was severely denigrated by the two players but he was trying to play it down.
"Mostly I think it stems from the possible naming of the team as Barnstoneworth Teletubbies. I would think that some of the guys are worried that our post match celebrations will be revealed, but I say the outfits look great and everyone has a good time so what's the problem. I'm hoping now that we can focus on the games and start playing good soccer."
So to the match in which it appeared that the players were distracted by the week's events. Barnstoneworth was clearly outplayed and were flattered by the 2-1 score line. Canobolas appeared more determined to get to the ball and their faster forwards made good use only to be regularly denied by the excellent work of keeper Chris Jacobs.
"It really showed that we need to get our positional play sorted out but it's only early in the season" said Powell. "Two weeks in a row we've scored late goals now and we really need to hit our straps from the start to have a chance. We pulled back three last week with fifteen to go and got one and chances for another on Saturday. In the end though we didn't deserve the win but look out for better performances after the Easter break."
Chris 'La-la' Jacobs got the three points, Ray 'Dipsy' Straney getting two for his late goal and Chris 'Tinky Winky' Jacobs getting one point.
