It is wise to read original studies if at all possible, using the evaluation techniques offered in the Caveat Corner section of this site. Many if not most of them can be found on one or more of the sites below. In other cases only the abstracts will be found - a second best alternative. Press releases or reports are a suspect source of information and should be taken with a large grain of salt. Bear in mind that when a study is later disproved or cannot be replicated, it is rare to have this reported with equal enthusiasm

"This web site is an interactive medical "journal club". Every two weeks I [Michael Jacobson, MD.] summarize and comment on an article from the recent medical literature. Feedback from readers is appended to the article summaries. The articles are primarily in the field of adult internal medicine and mainly from the New England Journal of Medicine, Annals of Internal Medicine, JAMA and the Lancet.

There is no commercial funding for this project, which is intended as an independent forum where the medical literature can be summarized and critiqued. It was created in November, 1995 and currently averages about 1,000 visitors per week, one third from outside the U.S.

Reader comments are integral to the concept of this Journal Club. Furthermore, a number of authors of the articles reviewed here have participated. This opens up the exciting perspective of an ongoing dialog between article authors and their readers."

Medsite Navigator, or M*N for short (pronounced "em en"), Guide to Digital Science & Medicine, serves as a travel gateway to Internet resources for health care and biomedical science. M*N is divided like an airport into hubs. There are five main conceptual hubs that  can be accessed from the "Home" link: News, Destinations, Search Tools, Mail, and Forums. Each hub collects and maintains a particular set of links. The "News Hub", for instance, holds  links to quality Internet news sources dealing with medical and scientific topics. Routes branch out from these entry hubs along common themes. These routes lead to M*N content, additional hubs, or target Internet sites. We refer to these target sites as "Medsites".

    http://www.infoxchange.net.au/wise/HEALTH/HRT2.htm

Alternative medicine and the menopause would have to be two of the more controversial topics in medicine today. They become even more controversial when presented together, as the alternative therapists' treatment of the menopause. As with all such issues, opinions tend to become polarized. Put differently, it's very rare indeed to find anyone who feels ambivalent about either of these issues and, in my experience, there are usually two firmly opposed views.

On the one hand there's the view that we have no business treating menopausal women, we're charlatans or quacks, and unscientific; our treatments haven't been investigated, they don't work or they're dangerous, and any effect is just placebo.

And on the other hand it is said that natural therapists are capable of treating everything, there's a plethora of natural medications to take instead of HRT, and because they're natural, they're safe and can be used by anyone at any time and for any length of time, with no thought of side effects

What I'm going to do today is introduce a realistic perspective on alternative medicine and the complexities of the management of the menopause. To this end, I will present an overview of the relevant naturopathic philosophies and finish with some of the more common treatments available..
