A. The tunica mucosa is composed of 3 layers

1. Stratified squamous epithelium

2. Lamina propria

3. Lamina muscularis

Stratified squamous epithelium - highly keratinized - in ruminants

Stratified squamous epithelium- slightly keratinized - in pigs

Stratified squamous epithelium - in horse more keratinized than pig

Stratified squamous epithelium - non keratinized - in dogs and cat (nature of food)

 Note: The degree of keratinization varies with the species.

2. Lamina Propria:

Lamina propria consists of dense network of collagen and elastic fibers.

3. Lamina muscularis:

Lamina muscularis contains only longitudinally oriented smooth muscle bundles.
