Profile:
A tall, lean fast bowler, Shabbir Ahmeds towering
height (65) helps him extract a great deal of bounce even on lifeless
wickets. He bowls from close to the stumps much like Glenn McGrath which
allows him to stick to a tight wicket-to-wicket line. He can swing the ball
away from right handers with the new ball, and is a good exponent of reverse
swing at the later stages of an innings. Shabbir had a tough initiation into
international career, being called for throwing after only his first ODI
appearance. Working with Michael Holding helped correct the kink in his
action, and also made him a more mature bowler. Still trying to win a
permanent place in Pakistans side, Shabbir started his Test career in style
with an eight-wicket haul against Bangladesh in Karachi, on a track that
offered no assistance to the pace bowlers. No pretensions with the bat,
though. Suhael Ahmed
