I was born in 1941 September 13th Just eighty-five days before Japan bombed Pearl Harbor. I did not realize there was a war going on, all I know is my daddy was gone a lot. He worked on the sperry bombsight manufacting process. This I learned later in my life. I was raised but my mother and grandmother. The picture on the left was taken about 1945. I went to a small two room school house that was about a mile down the road. It was very primitive with outside facilities. No one wasted time in the winter going to the bath room. For in upstate New York it was very cold in the winter. We lived on what was commonly called a One Horse Farm. Funny I dont remember us having a horse though. I helped with the chores milking cows, slopping pigs and feeding chickens. We had a garden in the summer and I helped Grannie weed and maintain it. We lived for the most part on what we grew and preserved. There was always plenty Jelly and Jams in the cellar. I also remember lots of preserved veggies and pickles. Grannie baked bread two times a week made pies and cakes. We slaughtered a cow every fall and there was always venison to eat. Chickens were also slaughtered and frozen in an old DeLaval Freezer. We never went hungry as far as know. We were not well off but food it was plentyful. My brother was born a year later and he also helped with chores. My early years are very fuzzy for me. I remember most of this from what I was told later on in life. The picture on the right is a recent one of me. I will not boor you with further details on my early life. Melody. |
