When Diego de le Vega returned to Los Angeles in 1821 right before completing his training at the University of Madrid he found that several things had changed in his home town.His father had written his teacher Sir Edmund Kendall asking if Diego was ready to return, because he was needed very badly at home. The cruelty of the new mayor the,"alcalde", was defeating to all people; vacqueros, peasents and caballeros alike.
On the lighter side of life he discovered that something else had changed as well. His childhood friend Victoria Esclante had grown into a beautiful woman who was the owner of the local tavern. Captivated by her instantly, he set out to win her hand. At first she seemed to feel the same way. And then HE came between them. The one person Diego couldn't abide interfering, his own creation, Zorro!
