Keeping a Journal...

Resources....

Keeping a Journal:

  • Date your entries - you can then see how far you have come.
  • Be Honest - you are writing for your own benefit - if you lie you are only lying to yourself.
  • Don't censor yourself - acknowledge your thoughts and feelings.
  • Write spontaneously - just write whatever comes to you.
  • Focus on your feelings - how you feel not how you should feel.
  • Keep it in a notebook, on the computer, online or on loose leaf pages in a file.

Things you might include in your journal:

  • Photo's
  • Poems
  • Scriptures
  • Quotes
  • Letters
  • Drawings and sketches

It is your journal, keep it the way you want to.

Sharing your journal - this is up to the individual. These are personal thoughts and feelings so you may not want to share the contents. Although sharing your journal with your partner or close friends may help them to understand where you are and how you are feeling.

Free-writing: Relax, clear your thoughts. Try not to think about anything. Just write, write whatever comes to mind, don't worry about whether it makes sense or not. Write fast and don't censor the writing. You will be surprised at what comes out.

Lists: Summaries of events. Like a shopping list. Make a list of events in your life, your pregnancy, the loss of your child; just about anything can be made into a list.

Unsent Letters: Write letters to significant people in your life - your child, partner, parents, friends or perhaps someone who has not supported you as you think they should. You may want to send the letter to the person to let them know how you feel. Sometimes it is not appropriate to send the letter, but at least you have released the emotions.
